X-rays For Children

X-rays for Children

An X-ray is a type of imaging procedure that uses low levels of radiation to create a picture of the inside of a person’s body. Different areas of the body show up in distinct colors based on their density. They're highly effective at diagnosing a variety of issues. Before you schedule an appointment or bring your child into Tulsa Pediatric Urgent Care, serving Tulsa, OK, to see Dr. Katie Dalton, Dr. Erin Grimes, or the nurse practitioner, you should familiarize yourself with the process.

Why an X-Ray May Be Needed

An X-ray may be recommended by one of our Tulsa pediatric urgent care specialists if your child is suspected of having a bone fracture. A practitioner will recommend an X-ray to look at the bone to assess for any crack or break. X-rays are also used to rule out a bone break. It's also possible to use an X-ray to evaluate some kinds of tissue damage.

An X-ray can be used to check to see if your child has an intestinal obstruction or if a foreign object has been swallowed. Another reason why your child may receive an X-ray is for lung issues, such as fluid buildup.

What Happens During an X-Ray

The first part of your visit starts with reviewing your little one's medical history and discussing any present symptoms. Your practitioner may request your little one receive an X-ray at this time for diagnostic purposes.

Before the X-ray begins, a practitioner will request your child remove jewelry, glasses, or any other items that could interfere with the test. Depending on the area being X-rayed, your child may need to put on a hospital gown.

The practitioner will then ask your child to sit, stand, etc. to ensure the specialist gets an accurate image of the part in question. The next step is the machine emitting radiation that is partially absorbed by the subject’s tissues. Each type of tissue takes in energy in differing amounts depending on its density, thus the different hues that show up on the image. The test takes about five to 10 minutes. An expert will need to read it to diagnose your little one accurately.
